Combat candidacy: simone peter wants to become head of grunen

She could succeed long-time grunen chair claudia roth at an upcoming party conference. There will be a fight for the party leadership: after anton hofreiter and katrin goring-eckardt, deputy party leader kerstin andreae (44) has announced her candidacy.

Peter told the deutsche presse-agentur (dpa) that her announcement was intended to signal that she was ready to run for office. She wants to make a final decision at a small party conference on saturday. Previously, peter had explained herself accordingly on her homepage. On thursday, federal managing director steffi lemke also kept her candidacy for the party chair open.

Andreae told dpa: "i am running for office."She had previously announced her move on the short message service twitter. Deputies hofreiter of the party left and goring-eckardt of the realos had already announced their candidacy for the chairmanship of the parliamentary group. Goring-eckardt resigns her leadership post at the protestant church in germany (EKD). During the election campaign, she had merely rested her office as president of the EKD church parliament.

If peter, andreae and hofreiter were elected to the top posts, it could be that only party leader cem ozdemir would remain as the better-known face in the leadership. He had announced his intention to stand for election again.

Goring-eckardt spearheaded grunen election campaign together with faction leader jurgen trittin. Like claudia roth and faction leader renate kunast, he had announced that he no longer wanted to continue in a leading role.

Peter told dpa: "after the poor election results, the greens need to get back to their core issues."She wants to use her experience as environment minister and member of the state parliament for the party chairmanship and for a powerful green party. "After the experiences in hamburg and saarland, i take a very critical view of a black-green coalition at the federal level," said peter. The 47-year-old was environment minister in saarland in the jamaika coalition between the CDU, grunen and FDP that collapsed at the beginning of 2012.

Andreae wrote in an email to the members of the parliamentary group, which was made available to dpa: "I have decided to do this because I want to make my contribution to regaining lost trust."She emphasized: "reorganization in terms of content also means questioning and correcting what has been done so far, without doubting our ecological and social principles."

Andreae, like goring-eckardt, belongs to the realo wing. Therefore, it is likely that the deputies will decide between these two candidates. Hofreiter is considered the candidate of the party’s left wing. But there may also be other candidacies before the election in the parliamentary group on 8 june. October are possible. The party is still discussing whether the next party congress should take place in october or november. Elections will be held for the party executive committee and the party council.

Regarding a coalition with the union, vice faction leader barbel hohn said on N24: "we will not get schwarz-grun now. I think I could bet on it."
